The highlights of IOM's humanitarian response in 2023
In 2023, the Democratic Republic of the Congo continued to be heavily affected by conflicts in its Eastern Provinces. In October 2023, 6.9 million people were internally displaced in the country, and since then the forced displacement in North Kivu has continued to increase due to the crisis in the Petit Nord Kivu.
IOM's humanitarian activities in the country include Site Coordination and Site Management (CCCM), for which IOM also co-leads the CCCM Cluster, Shelter and Non-Food Items (NFI), Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS), as well as population movement tracking through the Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM). Protection and mitigation of gender-based violence risks are integrated in a cross-cutting manner into the activities. Additionally, IOM actively participates in the identification and implementation of durable solutions when circumstances permit.
Some of our key achievements for the year include the management of IDP sites hosting 383,388 IDPs, construction of 10,128 emergency shelters, 1,560 latrines, and 826 showers, as well as the publication of 42 DTM reports.
